A Strong Foundation for Young Minds

Education lies at the heart of the Children’s Village. From nursery to primary school, every child has the chance to learn, grow, and dream.
Education is one of the cornerstones of the Children’s Village. Of the 81 children who live there, 36 are currently of primary school age. Their learning journey begins in our own nursery school, where they are taught the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic - in both Swahili and English - until the age of six.
From there, they move on to Ujenzi Primary School, an English-speaking private school just over two miles away. We made the transition to Ujenzi a year ago, and the results have been remarkable. Under the dedicated leadership of Head Teacher Mr Ngasoma, the school provides a warm, stimulating, and academically strong environment. Currently, 26 Malaika children (13 girls and 13 boys) attend classes there with great enthusiasm.

Ujenzi has around 300 students, divided into classes of about 30 pupils each. Nearly 30 teachers work from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., offering a full day of lessons. Pupils in Years 4 and 7, who are preparing for national exams, receive additional tuition and stay from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After their long school day, our bus brings them back to the Children’s Village - just in time for the daily sports hour, a welcome and energising break from their studies.
The curriculum follows a structure similar to that of UK schools, but there is also room for innovation. A recent addition is a weekly Mandarin class - a reflection of the growing Chinese presence in Tanzania.
However, not every child can attend Ujenzi. Sometimes we welcome older children who have never been to school and are unable to read or write. These children first attend Mkuranga Primary School, a government-run institution with a strong special education programme. There, they receive targeted support until they can join mainstream classes. Currently, ten of our children are enrolled at Mkuranga Primary, making steady progress toward literacy and numeracy.
