Malaika Kids rescues orphans and the most vulnerable children from the streets of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and gives them a stable, cared for upbringing.
For some children in Tanzania, a lonely life on the streets is all that awaits them. Their parents may have died from HIV/AIDS or other diseases, or these children may have found themselves homeless in large families where there are simply too many mouths to feed or no understanding of disability.
At Malaika Kids we work to give these children a chance by providing a stable upbringing. Wherever possible we support relatives to adopt orphaned children in their extended families, providing support through food and clothing to reduce strain on family units.
When there are no relatives we provide a home in our purpose-built Children’s Village in Mkuranga, where youngsters grow up in community groups and have access to balanced food, education, healthcare and the chance to socialise with children just like themselves.
We work with the Ministry of Social Welfare to provide support through two programmes: our Relatives Support Programme for children fostered with relations and our award-winning Children’s Village at Mkuranga. Where possible they are reunited with wider family members who are willing and able to foster them, with assistance from our Relatives Support Programme.
On leaving school, they may return to Dar es Salaam and live once more at our Reception Home while studying or training for employment.
Currently 10 older children are in training, based in the Reception Home.
A further 75 children are resident in the Children’s Village. 95 children receive support through the Relatives Support Programme.
