Sponsor a Child – Frequently Asked Questions
HOW DOES CHILD SPONSORSHIP WORK?
You select the age band and gender of the child you would like to support, and having completed your administrative details, you then get an information pack giving you the selected child’s history, background, birthday, and recent photographs. Then you will receive a specific report on your child once a year and frequent newsletters from Tanzania. It is most beneficial if viewed as a long-term relationship.
HOW WILL THE CHILD BENEFIT?
Contact from a sponsor is known to help vulnerable children’s motivation and self esteem. Your support will be directed towards their living, health, and educational expenses.
CAN I SEND GIFTS or MESSAGES?
It is our experience that the post is unreliable.
For something like a birthday treat it is preferable to send a message and a little extra money, which the house mother can use to celebrate with the family, via our Malaika Kids UK treasurer <click here>. We will try and get you photos of the party!
It is best to send any message as an email which can be sent via Malaika Kids UK <firstname.lastname@example.org> to the Child Support Supervisor, Emanuel. He will be pleased to translate the message into Swahili for your child.
CAN I VISIT?
Yes. The Children’s Village Mkuranga is a lively community and welcomes day visitors by arrangement. If you are planning a trip to Tanzania, do contact us in advance <email@example.com> and we will be pleased to make arrangements for you, at cost.
HOW MUCH DO THE CHILDREN COST?
Providing board and lodging in the Children’s Village Mkuranga costs £55 per child each month. Schooling for secondary children costs £900 a year, and for primary school it’s about £400.
CAN A CHILD HAVE MORE THAN ONE SPONSOR?
Yes, because as you see above, the overall cost per child can be over £1000 a year and every bit of sponsorship goes towards this.
HOW MUCH OF MY MONEY WILL GO ON ADMIN IN UK?
None. We pride ourselves on being a volunteer-led charity, where we pay all our own expenses. Therefore 100% of your donations will be used for child welfare in Tanzania.
HOW LONG SHOULD I SPONSOR?
Please understand that Malaika Kids receives no government support, so regular donors – of whatever amount – are the bedrock of our financial planning. The longer you can go on giving a regular amount, the more stable are the charity’s finances, and the more confident we are of expanding and taking on new vulnerable children.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY CHILD LEAVES MALAIKA KIDS?
We will give you news of their departure and invite you to transfer your sponsorship to a new child.
IS THERE A SET AGE AT WHICH CHILDREN MUST LEAVE?
No. We are focused on the best outcome for each child, so there is no set leaving age.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOUNG PEOPLE FOR LIFE BEYOND MALAIKA KIDS?
We arrange work experience visits while they are growing up, and when they are ready we transfer them to our half-way house in Dar-es-Salaam. This gives them a secure base while they complete vocational training or start a first job, We hope some may even get to university.
I LIVE OUTSIDE UK, CAN I STILL SPONSOR?
Yes, you are welcome to sponsor a child if you live outside the UK and you do not have a UK bank account. You would need to arrange this through your own bank in your country, for payment to the Malaika Kids UK bank account with CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) as below:
Account Name: Malaika Kids UK
